“What I want to emphasise here is the way it repeatedly produces startling images of white people as the dead devouring the dead. Much of what we see is just this: white people chomping away at white people. The pitch of horror is screwed up further in the climactic sequences of the first and last of the films. In Night, there is an aerial shot of some white figures moving across a field in a straggly line, with slow, terrible deliberation: we assume they are zombies, since this is how they have always been shown in the film; yet, when the film cuts to a ground level shot of these figures, we realise that they are the vigilantes (all of whom are white) come to destroy the zombies. There is no difference between whites, living or dead; all whites bring death and, by implication, all whites are dead in terms of human feeling). This is then forced home by the grim ending to the film. The focus of the film throughout is a group of people trapped in a small, isolated home-stead; …At the end of the film, the white vigilantes shoot him dead. Whites are dead, bring death and cannot stand that others live. Day is set in a military compound, one of the last outposts of the living in a world now overrun by zombies. At the end of the film…we see the chief representative of whiteness in the film torn apart by the zombies as they finally invade the compound. As they pull him literally limb from limb, he shrieks with terrible hysterical laughter, as if this is the apotheosis of whiteness: to be destroyed by your own kind”.
